Hand washing is one small but important thing, because from this habit you and your family can prevent transmission of the disease. However, there are still quite a lot of people who apply the wrong hand washing method so the results are not clean enough.
This is evidenced by a study from the Journal of Environmental Health which states that 10 percent of people are reluctant to wash their hands at all, even worse, only five percent of people are aware of washing their hands after using the toilet. 5 ways to wash hands wrong you should leave
1. Do not use soap
Have you ever found friends, relatives, family members, or even yourself who often wash your hands without soap? Yes, this one hand washing habit seems to be common in the community.
Many people argue that just by rinsing their hands with water, all the germs, viruses, and bacteria that attach to the hand will disappear in an instant.
Even though in fact, you still need soap so that your hands are really clean. According to Dr. Aileen Marty, MD, a professor of infectious diseases at Florida International University, that soap is made from a chemical ingredient that aims to eradicate the impurities lodged in the hand.
2. Using bar soap
Even though you can wash your hands well with soap, not all types of soap can be used, especially if you use bar soap. Because the germs that cause disease can be easier to hide in the bar soap that has been used.
Therefore, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends using liquid soap instead of bar soap because it might be contaminated with smaller germs.
Maybe when you are in an emergency, hand sanitizers can be the best choice. However, it would be even better if you keep rinsing with water and liquid soap. Of course you want to make sure that the hand is completely clean, right?
3. Don't dry your hands
Even though you have applied good hand washing, leaving your hands wet after washing your hands is not the right choice. Because Dr. Roshini Raj, MD, a doctor at NYU Medical Center, states that germs love to breed in water.
That is why, when you leave your hands still moist after washing your hands, the microbes from the things you touch will easily move and stick to your hands.
4. Using a hand dryer
You can easily find hand dryers in malls, buildings, or other large places. Most people will tend to choose to use a hand dryer instead of dry tissue. Though this action can actually trigger the growth of bacteria.
A study in 2012 showed that drying hands with tissue actually reduced germs compared to drying machines. But it cannot be denied, many people are reluctant to use sheets of tissue because they are not environmentally friendly.
Well basically, that doesn't mean using hand dryers is bad. The problem is that most people only briefly use hand dryers so that their hands are still moist or not yet completely dry, even though this facilitates the spread of disease germs.
But if only a hand dryer is available, the best way is to keep using the hand dryer only for a longer time, which is about 30 to 45 seconds or until you feel your hands are dry.
5. Wash hands too briefly
Try to remember again, how long did you spend washing your hands? Is it brief or long enough? Many people only refer to the use of soap as a powerful way to eradicate stubborn germs. In fact, soap cannot remove germs properly if you wash your hands for just a moment.
A study from Michigan State University found that about 95 percent of people are reluctant to rinse their hands for long periods of time and ensure cleanliness. This then allows the hand to keep germs, viruses, and bacteria.
