Who is not happy to have children who are diligent, polite, polite and accomplished? All parents will be proud. But this cannot be separated from the role of parents in building and developing a child's personality since he was little. Actually, when did a child begin to form his personality? What is the stage of the child's personality development?

What shapes the personality of my child?

Personality itself is a feature that makes everyone unique and different from others. Even personality can be seen as soon as someone is born. While children's personality development is the development of behavioral patterns and attitudes that shape a person.

Basically, personality development occurs due to the interaction of temperament, character, and environment. Because of the three components, a child eventually has their own personality.

  • Temperament is a collection of genetic traits that determine how your child adapts and learns about everything in this world. Some genes do control the development of the child's nervous system which ultimately affects behavior.
  • Environment, which is where children grow and develop. Child psychologists state that the most decisive thing in forming a child's personality is the temperament and environment around the child. Therefore, good parenting plays an important role in children's personality development.
  • Character, which is a series of emotional, cognitive, and behavioral patterns that are gained from experience. This component determines how a child thinks, behaves, and responds to what happens to him during life. Character will continue to grow along with the age of the child and depends on the experience he gets later.

What is the stage of the child's personality development?

Childhood personality is indeed formed early on even from his birth. The following are the stages of a child's personality development:

Baby personality

When a baby, his personality will slowly begin to form. The formation of a child's personality depends on the environment. At this stage the baby will learn the most basic personality lessons, namely trust and affection. At that time, your baby will begin to recognize affection, comfort and safety, and the trust of the people around him, especially you as a parent.

Toddler personality

The second stage of children's personality development occurs when they are 18 months to 4 years old. Children who are cared for and educated well, will begin to learn and understand the concept of independence. Moreover, at that age the children are just starting to actively use all their senses to explore the surrounding environment. So, this stage is the right stage for parents to teach children to be more independent and confident.

However, at this stage children also have a large ego that often pokes, stubborn, and rages. Therefore parents need to teach children to control themselves.

Preschool age personality

This third stage occurs when a child enters playing age, that is, from a 4-year-old child until he enters elementary school. In this stage the child is learning about the concept of feeling initiative and guilt. Children who enter this stage usually have high imagination and fantasy. Therefore, parents should direct it so that the imagination can actually be useful and develop itself.

Personality of school age children

This stage, the child is getting bigger so that more personality related lessons can be learned, such as:

  • Connect with peers
  • Learning to be disciplined, initiative towards something.
  • Learn to work in a team

At this stage, the role of parents and the surrounding environment greatly affects the personality of the child until he is an adult. Even in a study it was stated that the child's personality when he entered the first grade of elementary school was a strong predictor in predicting his personality when he was an adult. After that, the character of the child will continue to develop along with the experience he gets, and affect the personality of the child until he is an adult.
