Actually what is loneliness like?
Loneliness is a condition in which a person feels empty, alone, and unwanted. Experts agree that loneliness is a mental state, not a physical one. Many people feel lonely even though they are in a crowd or in the midst of their closest people.
For example, a new student who feels lonely despite being surrounded by peers on campus. Lonely people tend to feel alienated in a crowd. A lonely person often craves contact with other humans, but a chaotic state of mind makes it more difficult to form connections with other people.
Based on research conducted by Dr. John Cacioppo, a psychologist at the University of Chicago in the United States, is very closely related to genetics. In addition, exclusion, divorce, and the death of the closest person is also usually a common cause of loneliness. Loneliness is also associated with a person's internal factors, such as looking down on oneself due to lack of confidence. People who have self-confidence that lack trust that they are not worthy of attention from others. This condition can cause a person to feel lonely or isolated.
What's the difference between feeling lonely and lonely due to depression?
Loneliness sometimes stands alone, but it is not uncommon to be a sign of certain mental health problems. Normal loneliness is generally not a problem that must be handled specifically. While loneliness that leads to depression requires immediate treatment so as not to lead to more severe conditions. Therefore, it is important to understand the fundamental differences regarding natural loneliness and loneliness associated with depression.
Loneliness that is still reasonable is usually subjective and does not have certain indicators to be categorized as lonely. This is because the causes and symptoms can be different in each person.
While loneliness due to depression is usually more complicated because not only feel alone, loneliness is usually accompanied by symptoms of depression in general. To be able to see the difference in loneliness between the two cases, here are some common symptoms of depression, namely:
- Feeling worthless and ignored by anyone. You might feel that your life is very bad. You always think of failures and losses that have ever happened in life.
- Hopeless. You will be a very pessimistic person and believe that nothing good will happen to you.
- Excessive anxiety. The weight that you think about you will feel excessive anxiety beyond your control.
- Not interested in doing anything. Hobbies or activities that you usually enjoy may no longer interest you. In fact this also has an impact on your sex life and your partner. When a person feels depressed, his sexual desire can drop dramatically.
- Have no passion. You may feel yourself very tired and not passionate. This condition usually leads to abandonment of tasks and daily work.
- Difficult to concentrate. You will usually be difficult to focus, even for trivial matters. For example watching TV or reading news on the internet.
- Changes in sleep patterns. People who have depressive symptoms usually experience changes in sleep. You may wake up too early, but at other times you may experience insomnia and not be able to sleep all night. It's also possible that you sleep longer than usual.
- Changes in appetite. Not only does sleep experience changes, your appetite will usually turn out to be irregular. Sometimes feeling always hungry, but it can also be the opposite, you don't feel hungry at all. Therefore depression usually results in a dramatic increase or decrease in body weight in a person.
- Aches and pains. Depression can lead you to several health problems such as headaches, abdominal cramps, abdominal pain, or other digestive problems.
