Medical Video: Penis Facts - Learn More About Your Penis

You may have dozens or decades of having a penis, but that doesn't mean you know everything about one of the most vital organs of this body. Check out some of the following facts about the penis that might surprise you.

1. You can damage your penis

Your penis can be damaged when dislocated during an erection. The penis does not have bones, but a channel filled with blood when the erection can rupture. Blood will come out of the duct inside the penis and will cause tremendous pain. Such cases are rarely encountered, but it is possible that some men are just too shy to see a doctor.

Sexual damage, when the couple is above, has a probability of 1 in 2 of the total cases. Damage usually occurs when a man's penis slips from his partner and then collides or is pinched hard.

2. Men can experience several erections every night

On average, a healthy man can experience 3-5 erections during sleep a night, which every erection can last around 25-35 minutes. It is very common for men to get up early while having an erection, or commonly known as a "morning glory". In fact the erection in the morning is the last part of the erection at night. This is because erection at night does not get a response. The study explains that this is nothing but a kind of phase during sleep such as REM (rapid eye movement). This is very common during dreams. Whatever the cause, most doctors believe that erection at night is a sign that your penis is fine.

3. Penis length is not related to foot size

According to published studies the British Journal of Urology International, the belief that penis size comes from the proportion of shoe size is a myth. University College London researchers measured penises from 104 men, including teenagers and retirees. The average length of the penis in this group is 13 cm when stretched slowly, and the average size of shoes in the UK is 9 (43 in European size). So the researchers did not find any relationship between shoe size and penis length.

4. A short penis usually extends more during erection

A short penis usually increases in length more during an erection than a penis that was originally long. Research based on 2,770 penis measurements found that a shorter penis can extend to about 86% when erect, almost twice that of a long penis (which will extend to only 47%).

In 1988, studies were published on The Journal of Sex Research found that the difference in length between a short penis and a long one is not very clear when erect than normal. For example, a normal penis is 3.1 cm long, while the average length of the penis when erect is only 1.7 cm.

5. The penis is not a muscle

This is why you cannot move the penis freely during erection. The penis is something like a sponge that is filled with blood when a man is passionate. Blood rises into 2 cylindrical sacs which causes the penis to enlarge and become stiff. This enlargement then inhibits the pulse that usually drains blood from the penis. After the erection is complete, the blood flow returns to normal and blood returns to flow leaving the penis.
