Medical Video: Do sex and masturbation cause hair loss?

Masturbation is still one of the topics that is very taboo to be blatantly discussed in the midst of modern society. In the end, there are many misconceptions and myths about masturbation. Still hear a lot, right, if you say masturbation makes your knees empty - even though it's been proven wrong? What about the whispers of neighbors who say masturbation makes hair fall? See the medical explanation below.

What do we do when masturbating?

Masturbation or masturbation is sexual activity carried out alone by stimulating intimate organs or sensitive areas using their own hands (can use sex toys as well) to get sexual satisfaction for themselves.

Men masturbate to play penis, testicles, and anus. Conversely, stimulation during masturbation in women is more directed at the breast, clitoris, and vagina.

Masturbation is generally done while imagining erotic scenes or imaginations. Not infrequently also people masturbate while watching porn.

Is it true that masturbation makes hair loss?

The answer is no, masturbation does not make your hair fall out. Several small studies have shown a link between increased levels of androgen hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that triggers baldness, which is converted from the hormone testosterone resulting from stimulation of masturbation. Increased DHT does play a role in causing hair to fall out more, but masturbation is not found to be the sole cause of this increase.

Another theory says that masturbation reduces the availability of protein in the body because it is channeled through semen that comes out during ejaculation. Hair is made of a special protein called keratin, and semen does contain protein. However, this theory cannot be used as strong evidence because the protein released during ejaculation is not enough to have a large effect on hair loss.

Long story short, there is no strong medical scientific evidence to support the myth that says masturbation makes hair fall. Hair loss is generally caused by a condition called telogen effluvium (TE). This condition is influenced by several factors, such as:

  • Natural aging
  • Physical and mental stress
  • Pregnancy
  • Drastic weight loss
  • High fever
  • Operation
  • The healing process of pain, especially if accompanied by high fever
  • Stop using birth control pills
  • Consume too much vitamin A
  • Protein deficiency
  • Anemia
  • Vitamin B deficiency
  • Currently in the treatment of autoimmune diseases
  • Hormonal changes

Hair loss due to telogen effluvium is transient, and can usually heal within 6 to 9 months after you are released from the trigger factor.

But if the amount of hair loss that you experience is very much beyond reasonable limits, more than 100 strands per day, it never hurts to consult a doctor. Severe hair loss is not caused by masturbation, but may be caused by autoimmune diseases such as alopecia areata, lupus, to polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
