Medical Video: A1 or A2 Milk?

Recently the world of health is busy talking about the birth of a new milk variant that is said to be better and healthier than other types of milk. This new milk variant is called milk A2.So, what is A2 milk and what is the difference with other types of milk? Read on to find out the answer.

What is A2 milk?

As with milk in general, this milk is a type of milk that is also produced from dairy cows. However, it is different from ordinary milk which contains two types of beta-casein proteins namely A1 and A2. So this A2 milk only contains beta protein casein A2 because it is produced from cattle which naturally only have A2 protein content.

So, simply A2 milk is a dairy product that only has A2 protein content from special cows or selected cows that are strictly selected. This milk has been marketed in Australia and New Zealand for several years, and has just entered the United States market.

So, is it true that milk A2 is healthier?

Usually someone consumes milk with a content of 40 percent A1 and 60 percent A2. The difference in the two contents was assessed slightly. Because, A1 has histidine amino acid which is located at position n67 in the protein chain. Meanwhile A2 has an amino acid proline.

In the process, so that food and drinks are absorbed by the body, they must be broken down by digestive proteins. When it comes to protein A1, the body's enzymes break it down in histidine which then creates protein fragments called beta-casomorphin-7 (BCM-7) compounds.

Well, these fragments affect digestion and produce a series of symptoms similar to lactose intolerance, such as abdominal discomfort, stomach cramps, bloating, and diarrhea that occur after consuming dairy products. As for A2 milk, there is no BCM-7 because it does not have histidine amino acid and only has amino acid proline, so it is considered more friendly for digestive function.

But, this might not apply to people who do have a high level of sensitivity to milk protein, considering that the true protein content remains in milk A2. Although this type of milk can also be a solution for people who have low tolerance or are allergic to lactose.

Proline amino compounds contained in this type of milk are also considered beneficial in maintaining muscles and joints. Not only that, proline plays a role in cell production by breaking down proteins that are useful for the skin especially when there are wounds to reduce inflammation or bleeding.

But don't drink milk A2 carelessly

Reporting from the Huffington Post, further research is needed to prove the health benefits of A2 milk which is considered better than other types of milk. Not only that, further research is also needed to ascertain whether A2 milk can be one solution for those who are allergic to milk or not.

Although, the company A2 Milk Company - a company that produces A2 milk in New Zealand since 2000, claims A2 milk can be an option for people who are sensitive to traditional milk in general, and have included information from the European Safety Authority to support the claim.
